About Fontography.com
Fontography.com helps you choose fonts by showing them where they will actually be used: on a full article, a homepage and a landing page. It is free, it uses only Google Fonts, and it turns an afternoon of trial and error into a few minutes.
Why We Built Fontography.com
We build and run websites, and choosing fonts was always the step that took the longest for the least certainty. A pairing that looked perfect in a font specimen, one heading over one line of text, often fell apart on a real page. Long paragraphs felt heavy, headings wrapped in awkward places, navigation looked cramped, and the bold weight we needed turned out to be missing.
The usual fix was to build the page, swap the fonts, reload and repeat. Fontography.com is the tool we wanted for that job. Pick two fonts and see them straight away on pages that look like the ones you are making, then copy the code to use them when you are done.
What Makes It Different
Most font pairing sites show a pair as a heading and a sentence. That is useful for browsing, but it tells you little about how a whole page will feel. Fontography.com sets every pair on three realistic templates, in light and dark, with real headings, body text, lists, buttons and navigation, so you judge fonts the way your readers will meet them.
Every font on the site is free on Google Fonts and released under an open license. Anything you find here can go straight onto your website, into your app or onto a printed page without a license fee.
The Guides
Alongside the generator, we write guides to the questions people ask most: what to pair with a popular font such as Montserrat or Inter, and which free fonts come closest to paid favourites such as Helvetica, Futura and Avenir. Every pairing in a guide opens in the full-screen preview, so you can check our suggestions for yourself instead of taking them on trust.
Who It Is For
Fontography.com is for anyone who has to choose fonts without being a type designer: bloggers and small business owners setting up a theme, developers building a product, marketers putting together a landing page, and designers who want a quick second opinion. If you can tell when a page looks right but find it hard to say why, the preview does the explaining.
How We Choose Pairings
Good typography is mostly restraint. Two fonts are almost always enough, each with one clear job. The difference between them should be obvious, readability comes before personality in body text, and a pair is only good if it works on a real page. Those ideas shape every preset pair in the generator and every recommendation in the guides.
Who Makes Fontography.com
Fontography.com is an independent project from FourthMedia, Inc., a small team that builds and runs websites. It is free to use, with no account and no sign-up.
Help Us Make Fontography.com Better
Fontography.com is a work in progress, and we want the people who use it to shape what comes next. Tell us if there is a font pairing you would like us to add, a font you want a guide for, a feature that would save you time, or something that is not working. We read every message, and your requests decide what we build next.
